Here is the Message from the Special Olympics Asia Pacific:
Special Olympics is dedicated to transforming the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and transforming the communities in which people with intellectual disabilities live. Special Olympics has been serving people with intellectual disabilities for over 47 years. We engage with people with intellectual disabilities all year round in sports, health screenings and follow up care, athlete leadership, youth advocacy and community outreach for an inclusive society.
Special Olympics Asia Pacific Region office is based in Singapore and is a member of National Council of Social Services. A major focus for Special Olympics Asia Pacific is to encourage young people with and without intellectual disabilities from across the region(with a specific focus on our base in Singapore)to engage with the movement and be empowered to act to address the issues of social inclusion, respect, acceptance and equality for people with intellectual disabilities.
We are hosting Special Olympics Asia Pacific GenUin Youth Summit on 19 -20 March 2016 in Singapore. Special Olympics Asia Pacific is challenging the young people with and without intellectual disabilities between the age of 17 to 25 years old, forming teams of 2 to 4 people to formulate meaningful and practical projects that aim to encourage the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. These projects will then be reviewed at the Summit and the best 5 projects will receive funding to be implemented by the young people themselves.
We believe that the Special Olympics Asia Pacific GenUin Youth Summit provides an opportunity to tap on the leadership potential of young people drawing on their individual skills and strengths to create classroom and community activities; to foster genuine friendships and positive behavioural change among people with and without intellectual disabilities.
